Whats the difference between legal and temperary custody?

my husband has a petition for custody for his niece due to hardship on account of his sister. it was a one day procedure., it says he has obtained custody, however it is suppose to be temparary until she gets herself together. now what i want and need to know would it have said temperary or being that it states legal custody would he have to go back to court to return custody to her.
